No matter how well you care for your teeth, things can happen over the course of your life that can cause minor damage to your smile. Your teeth can become chipped or fractured. Tooth decay can damage your teeth, and they can become discolored.

While there are different options for improving your smile, bonding is an easy, and often inexpensive way to do so. It is usually done in a single visit, and unless decay needs to be removed from your tooth, anesthesia is not usually not needed. In addition to repairing your teeth, or concealing discoloration, bonding can be done to close gaps between your teeth and when necessary, lengthen them.

The process is straightforward. The dentist will etch the surface of your tooth and coat it with a liquid to help the bonding material adhere to it. Your dentist will select a resin that matches the color of your tooth, and mold it to the shape of your tooth. After the resin has been shaped, the dentist will use an ultraviolet light to harden it, before polishing the resin to match your other teeth.

If properly cared for, your bond could last for ten years. However, if you chew on ice, pen caps or other items; or open packages with your teeth, you could damage the bond. The dental bond is not as strong as the enamel on your natural teeth. Your bond can be stained by coffee, tea and other drinks or foods, and a bonded tooth still needs to be brushed just like your natural teeth.
