Do your gums bleed while you brush or floss? If so, you may be dealing with gum disease. Gum disease can threaten your oral health and lead to tooth loss. That’s why our team is eager to talk to you about the symptoms of gum disease.

Gum disease is a dangerous health condition which primarily affects the gums, but can damage your teeth and even your jaw bone. In these extreme cases, it causes tooth loss and bone loss. In gum disease’s initial stage, called gingivitis, it can be reversed. However, once it progresses into its advanced stage, periodontitis, you cannot cure it–only stop it from causing further damage.

There are several symptoms of gum disease. These can include gums that bleed easily, or pull away from teeth; persistent bad breath or bad taste in foods; red, swollen, or tender gums; or a change in your bite pattern. If you have noticed any of these symptoms in your mouth, call your dentist  immediately to get treatment.

The most common cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing regularly are your main tools to use when it comes to combating gum disease.
