Did you know that dentures can actually help you look younger? When you lose all of your teeth, your facial muscles can sag, which may make you appear older than you are. Adding dentures can help fill out your face shape again and help the years fall away with a beautiful smile.
Three different kinds of dentures are the conventional, immediate and partial. Conventional dentures are placed in your mouth after all remaining teeth have been removed and the healing process has occurred. The process could take several months, during which period you may be without teeth.
Immediate dentures may be inserted soon after the teeth have been removed. This may greatly reduce your time spent without teeth. However, because your mouth is healing, the denture must be relined and you may even require a new one after a few months.
A partial denture is a removable appliance which sits on a metal frame and attaches to your natural teeth. We may place crowns on your adjoining teeth to serve as anchors. This particular denture can be an alternative to getting a bridge.
For the first few weeks or months, it may be normal for the dentures to feel uncomfortable or loose while your cheek muscles and tongue get used to holding them in place. It is recommended that you practice eating and speaking during this time.
Throughout the lifetime of your dentures, you will need to have them relined or have a new base added. Your mouth undergoes natural changes as you age, and Dr. Larry Leonakis can help adjust them as your mouth changes.
Try not to drop your dentures as they may break. If you notice they are broken, chipped, cracked or loose, come in and see us. Brush your dentures and gums daily. When not in use, put the dentures in a cleanser soaking solution or in water.
